Product North Star Generator

Two-phase tool. Phase one creates the transformation-level North Star — why your organization is moving from project to product, in language anyone can understand. Phase two creates a product-level North Star for each product in your taxonomy. AI actively challenges vague drafts and proposes stronger alternatives.

north_starPhase 1 — Transformation North Star

Why are you moving from project to product?

The transformation North Star is a single sentence that every employee — not just senior leaders — can understand and connect to personally. It names the customer and describes what changes in their life when you succeed.

1
What does your business do — for whom?
2-3 sentences. Focus on customers and the problem you solve for them, not internal process.
2
Why now — what triggered the move from project to product?
What pressure, failure, or opportunity made the status quo unsustainable? Be specific.
3
What is currently most painful — for customers?
Not internal pain — what do your customers complain about or struggle with because of how you currently work?
4
What does success look like in 3 years — for customers?
Describe the customer experience that would be different. Not metrics — what a customer would say or feel.
Please complete all four fields before generating.

What makes a great North Star?
The five tests

The specificity test. Could this statement describe any organization in your industry? If yes, it's too generic.

The customer test. Does a specific customer appear — not "users" or "customers" in the abstract, but the actual person being served?

The outcome test. Does it describe what changes in the customer's life or work — not what the organization will do?

The jargon test. Would an employee on their first day understand every word? No "leverage," "enable," "deliver value."

The resonance test. Would an employee read it and think "yes — that's why I come to work"?

Examples: weak vs strong
The difference in practice

✗ Too generic

"We will transform how we deliver digital experiences to drive competitive advantage."

✓ Specific and resonant

"Small business owners understand their whole business in one place and get what they need from us in days, not months."

✗ Process-focused

"We will move to continuous delivery and customer-led product development."

✓ Outcome-focused

"Merchants spend their time growing their business, not managing our systems."
